EVP Spotlight with Deonca Shuler

Meet our 2020-2021 League Executive Vice President, Deonca Shuler! Deonca has been a member of the Junior League of Columbia for nine years and has served in a multitude of roles. As EVP, she serves as the link between the League’s Board of Directors and Management Team. She facilitates and ensures the overall alignment of League work and leads the Management Team in carrying out the mission of the League according to the strategic plan. We asked her a few questions to get to know her a little better and gain insight into what she envisions for us this year.

What are you most excited about for this league year? “I’m excited to lead in my current role as Executive Vice President this year during a global pandemic which will require us to rethink how we make an impact on our community. Our league has a phenomenal group of women who are motivated and ready to lead during this pandemic. I am inspired by our members and those that serve in leadership roles and how they make a huge impact in our community. I’m excited about the efforts our diversity equity and inclusion plan for this year and the implementation of the DEI Strategic Plan. Junior League of Columbia has seen a change in the make up of our league, in the community partners with whom we work with and how we communicate our message.”

If you had to pick one goal to accomplish for this year, what would it be? “For all members to participate in the 21-Race Day Race Challenge. This challenge is an opportunity for all members, regardless of your position in the league to plant the seed for a lifetime commitment to standing up for racial justice.

What was your most monumental moment or experience so far in the League? “My most monumental moment in the league was serving as Vice President of Membership. We hosted our first prospective member open house event that allowed women in Columbia to learn about the ways the JLC gives back to our community. In addition, the requirement was lowered for a prospective member to only have one sponsor. These strategic efforts led to 150 WOMEN applying for membership into the organization for the 2019-2020 year.

What advice do you have for women who want to grow in their leadership capabilities, especially in JLC? “Remember JLC is the gift that keeps on giving through developing the potential leadership of our members. The JLC will help develop you for servant leadership opportunities within the league and in your professional career. Never be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone you’ll be surprised on what you can accomplish.”
