New Member Projects

The Girl Scouts of South Carolina- Mountains to Midlands (GSSCMM) host troops from around the state for weekend events throughout the year. Our JLC New Members work with Rebecca Sgroi, STEM and Leadership Center Program Manager, to plan each weekend’s interactive, educational activities. During the projects, JLC New Members help the Girl Scouts learn and develop new skills, while showing the girls the importance of giving back to the community. Our New Members serve as mentors, role models, and examples of upstanding members of the community.

The first New Member Project of the League year was successfully completed! The Girl Scouts worked towards receiving their healthy eating badge by being hands on in the kitchen. The Girls had a blast answering questions about nutritional eating during the ‘Nutritional Games’. Lastly, the girls worked together to create a healthy menu and design beautiful table settings. It was a fun day for the Girl Scouts and JLC’s New Members!

During the “Spring Into Wellness” events, New Members set up fitness and cooking stations for the Girl Scouts. The day started with the girls learning about how different food groups fuel their bodies. Then, it was time for activities! After baking sweet treats, the girls enjoyed a yoga session and dance fitness party before gathering on the patio to taste test the goodies. New Members had a great time during a program that served as a reminder that the connection between our mind and body is important!

Rebecca Sgrio, the STEM and Leadership Program Manager for the GSSCMM mentioned that “working with the Junior League of Columbia these past few years has been a remarkable experience. It brings us so much joy seeing our Girl Scouts getting hands-on time with women in their community who strive to make a difference. From overnights to weekend workshops, I have had the opportunity to meet so many women from our community, from all different backgrounds. It’s always a sweet moment to be able to connect with them and to show them our beautiful Cathy Novinger Girl Scout Leadership Center. So many of these women have shared that they were Girl Scouts growing up, and seeing them reflect on their time, as well as spend time with current Girl Scouts bring so much enjoyment to these events. I can’t wait to continue seeing the Junior League of Columbia continue their outstanding work across the Columbia area!”
