Junior League of Columbia


Founded in 1924, the Junior League of Columbia (JLC) is an organization of women from the Midlands area of South Carolina. For nearly 93 years, the JLC has been committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

The JLC is part of the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI), one of the oldest, largest, and most effective women’s volunteer organizations in the world. We reach out to women of all races, religions, and national origins who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to voluntarism. Today, we have more than 1,500 members, including Provisional, Active, and Sustaining members.

Membership with the JLC offers many benefits, including opportunities for leadership, training, skill development, networking, and friendships. Most importantly, membership offers a chance to give back to the community and experience the fulfillment that comes from helping others.

Community Impact

In 2011, the JLC adopted a new focus of healthy children to support the improvement of children’s physical and mental wellness including dental health, self-esteem, healthy eating, and active lifestyle.  We collaborate with community partners to offer a variety of projects, programs, and initiatives addressing healthy children.  Through these efforts, our members have the opportunity to get involved and make a difference in our community.

During the 2016-2017 League year, the JLC...

  • Utilized 619 JLC volunteers;
  • Worked 66 various community shifts;
  • Logged 216 volunteer hours in the community;
  • Logged 106 hours training/plannig for events;
  • Worked 347 hours on the day of events;
  • Worked with 39 different community partners; and
  • Was involved in 50 community projects.

Civic Leadership

Developing the potential of women to be effective community volunteer leaders is at the core of our mission. Through hands-on training and formal learning opportunities, we give our members the skills needed to make an even greater impact on the Midlands. In addition to each member's placement and volunteer work, the JLC offers various training opportunities to help our members reach their personal goals.

Training Events.  In an effort to develop our member’s leadership potential, the JLC provides various training events throughout the year related to effective community leadership and personal development.

Lunch and Learns.  Due to the busy schedules of our members, the JLC offers workshops for members to learn about a variety of topics relevant to our community, from advocacy to local issues, during their lunch hour.

AJLI Opportunities.  JLC members at all levels have access to the AJLI's valuable training programs, including national conferences, regional meetings, online self-paced courses, and webinars.
